Day 74
Idols of the Heart
Ezekiel 14:1–5 (AMP) THEN CAME certain of the elders of
Israel to me and sat before me. And the word of the Lord came to me: Son of
man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts and put the stumbling
block of their iniquity and guilt before their faces; should I permit
Myself to be inquired of at all by them? Therefore speak to them and say to
them, Thus says the Lord God: Every man of the house of Israel who takes his
idols [of self-will and unsubmissiveness] into his heart and puts the stumbling
block of his iniquity [idols of silver and gold] before his face, and yet comes
to the prophet [to inquire of him], I the Lord will answer him, answer him
according to the multitude of his idols, That I may lay hold of the house of
Israel in the thoughts of their own mind and heart, because they are all
estranged from Me through their idols.
In this scripture, some of the elders
of Israel came to Ezekiel with things in their heart (idols in their hearts)
that they loved more than God. They did not come to God with a love in their
hearts for His will in a matter; they came to Him wanting God to bless their
selfish desires. The Lord’s answer would not be His will or His blessing, but
what they wanted to hear from their desire (the idol of their heart) and it
would bring destruction. Destruction would cause the elders to ask, “Why did this
happen God after all you blessed it?”
Likewise, many Christians believing
their desire is from God ask Him to bless their desire without asking Him if
this is His desire for their lives. And when the plan doesn’t work out they
come back to God asking, “Why did this happen God after all you blessed it?”
With that question comes a teachable
moment in which the asker can learn the desire he or she had was not from God
but was (self-willed) and it is best to ask God for His will rather than His
blessing on their desire.
However, when you take up your cross
to obey the commandment to love, self and selfish desires are crucified along
the way. As we grow in relationship with Jesus our desires change from the
cares and things of this life to knowing Him and wanting His will.
